Information to visitors

Silex’s is the interpretation centre of the Neolithic flint mines of Spiennes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the oldest and largest flint mines site in Europe with thousands of mines shafts. Archaeologists are at work in the site.

The interpretation centre provides:

  • a permanent exhibition,
  • the possibility to descend into a true Neolithic flint mine (see below for reservation),
  • maps of outdoor walks (available at Silex’s entrance).

Visits you can do

It is possible to visit the ground floor of the Silex’s with or without a guide. These visits don’t include the flint mine descent. No reservation is necessary in these cases except for groups of more than 10 people.

Silex’s entry prices

Full price: 6€

Reduced price (groups > 10 people/students/seniors,…): 4€

Family price (min 1 adult and 2 children/max. 2 adults and 5 children/price per person): 2€

Children (under 12 years): 2€

  1. Visit of the Silex’s ground floor without the flint mine (guided tour) – 45’

Silex’s price (entrance) + guide (50€/group – maximum 20 people during the week–end and on Saturday – 65€/group during Sunday, evening and public holiday

  1. Visit of the Silex’s ground floor + flint mine descent (always guided tour) – 1H30’

In order to preserve the flint mine, only 3*12 people may descend into the mine each day following this time schedule: the 1st group at 10:30, the 2nd group at 11:30 and the 3rd at 14:00 (maximum 12 people per group). Please, be present minimum 15 ‘ before the visit starts.  

Note that you make the descent into the flint mine (10 meter deep) with a ladder (children under 10 years are not admitted and the visit is not recommended for pregnant women).

The temperature in the mine is 12° C all year. Flat shoes and trousers are required. Please, dress yourself accordingly.

Two modes of visits are proposed for the guided tour (surface + flint mine): groups or individuals. See below to contact Visit Mons.

  1. Groups: Visitors come with family members or friends, compose themselves a group of 12 people and book their visit at Visit Mons. Possibility to have a guided tour in English, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian,….

Price: Silex’s entry price (see above) + 95€/group (max 12 people for the mine)

Or

  1. Visit for individuals       :
    Visitors join a group (12 people maximum).     
    This is possible on Saturdays and Sundays at 14:00 and during the holidays (from Thursday to Sunday) mentioned below.
    In this case, the guided tour is generally in French.

Parking “Place de Spiennes – 7032 Spiennes” – GPS 50.425435, 3.986929

A marked trail takes you to Silex’s (15’ on foot). The church behind you, go straight on in "rue des prisoniers" and follow the little walker signs.
After the river “Trouille”, turn left until you find a big staircase (on your right) which leads you to Silex’s centre. It's the shortest way.

Parking for disabled people: parking 300 rue du Point du Jour – 7032 Spiennes.
